Lentils, please.

Alright. So. I bought a bag of Brown Lentils and tried out a recipe with them.
The recipe itself wasn't the problem, the problem was that although it was a good recipe (tacos!) I didn't really understand how to cook them, they turned out really gritty and more than a little unpalatable.
So, now I have 3/4th a bag of lentils and no idea how to cook them (the package directions did not yield anything remotely tasty) and no idea what to do with them, recipe wise.
Help?

Some necessary details:
I've already looked under the lentils tag, and clearly not everyone tags
because there are only 4 posts there, so more help is needed.
I do not subscribe to Vegetarian magazines, to expensive.
I have limited library access due to Summer.

A question from what I have read:
.Does soaking them really work to help the cooking/eating process?

new shoes blues-AND JOY!!!

SO i'm finding myself in a fix of infidelity. My wonderful Brooks Green Silences were lovely last year. They put bounce to my step, made me feel i was flying-but lately all they do is stab and shout. My knees, my shins, my ankles are all in dissary. So i left them in my closet, sneaked out to the store, and tried on a Pretty Young Thing-Brooks Pure Connect. Being a runner for about 2 years now, i feel slightly guilty, foresaking my old shoes. but HEY! I'm totally ready for my company's 5K on thursday!! !!!!

Training Week Ending June 02-03, 2012

Greetings, [info]runners! Please tell us about your past training week and upcoming goals

**This is a weekly thread maintained by myself, posted every weekend. Runners of all ages and abilities are encouraged to use it to document their training and goals. Feedback is also encouraged, which helps keep a sense of community - thanks!
I ran the Race for the Cure 5K in downtown DC this morning, finishing the "course" in 19:42.  It is hopefully the closest in my running career I'll ever get to being in a zombie uprising.

But more on that later.

Karen's Tattletale (Chapters 1-6)

I'm bored, lazy, feeling snarky, and reading a lot of Babysitter's Little Sister books while I wait for the 3 new ones plus the Rachel Morgan book I ordered. Time for a new snark, whoooohoooo!!! *fanfare*

I feel the need to point out before delving into the snarky goodness (it's magically snarkalicious! okay you can now kill me for using that word) that this book could be renamed Karen's Well Deserved Karmic Justice. The events of this book come about because Karen decided to be a bitch to Andrew (what else is new) and since stupid Lisa refused to call her out or punish her for it, Andrew decided to go ahead and do it for her. This could also be renamed Andrew's Crowning Moment Of Awesome, and for those of you who like seeing Karen finally get what she deserves, this is the book for you. But of course, the book wants us to root for Karen here and Andrew is supposed to be a horrid little brat-child for what he did. What the hell else is new?

Onward with the snarkaliciousness! )

The worst of Karen

I know there was a thread like this is the past, but I didn't think I should bump it up. And besides, it'd be nice to have new opinions. What book or books do ya'll think highlighted the very, very worst of Karen in terms of brattiness, bitchiness, being a karma houdini, or general irritation?

Onward for particularly stunning examples in Karen brattiness )

"Chicken" salad

From my blog.

Before I start, you should know two things:
1) I am the master of half-assing all my homemade recipes. More often than not I use dry seasonings, canned or frozen ingredients, etc., instead of bothering with fresh ones (although I do tend to have a lot of fresh fruit on hand usually).
2) This was doubly half-assed because I usually put a little more effort into my “chicken” salad, being one of my favorite dishes that I don’t often indulge in. But I wanted a quick dinner. I will probably make a better version tomorrow, so stay tuned if you’re interested.
In the meantime:
- 1 Quorn Naked Chik’n Cutlet, cut into chunks
- 1 tsp dried parsley flakes
- 1 tbsp Italian Seasoning
- 1 tsp kelp powder
- 1 tsp dried chopped onion
- 2 tbsp nonfat plain Greek yogurt
- 1 tbsp low fat mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 4-5 red grapes
- vegetable oil or Pam for cooking
Mix all dry seasonings and oil in pan. Cook cutlet on medium heat until lightly brown around the edges and thoroughly warm, coating with seasonings and oil.
Add contents of pan to food processor along with grapes, yogurt, mustard, and mayonnaise, and process to desired consistency.
Again, this is my half-assed version. Use fresh seasonings if you have them. I also like adding a little spinach, a half a slice of apple, avocado, or some toasted nuts (cashews are my favorite in this recipe).
This is great alone, on lettuce, as a sandwich, with chips, or as a veggie dip. This one was great because the kelp powder really helped to satisfy a seafood craving I’ve been having lately.
This is also a low-guilt meal to enjoy, punching in at 114 calories per serving.

Finally, the thrilling conclusion! Here we go...

Chapters 11-15! Yeah! )

And that's that! Now I just to have to deal with those outfits...
